"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." Psalm 147:3
I've been asked one question more times than I can count: "How do I heal?"
I wish there were an antidote. A step-by-step formula guaranteeing healing with minimal scars. There isn't. Healing is rarely neat or predictable. It's messy, vulnerable, deeply personal. But I've found that the question itself is already a good beginning. It's the cry of an open, desperate heart ready for God to meet it.
Here are four steps I've found powerful in walking through the healing process:
Healing can't happen where acknowledgment won't. Whether the pain comes from your own mistakes, someone else's, or something else entirely, the first step is admitting that something isn't right. Ignoring or minimizing brokenness never leads to wholeness.
David prayed, "Against you, and you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight" (Psalm 51:4). Denial traps us in cycles of shame, excuse, and pretense. Sometimes covering for ourselves, sometimes for someone else. But grace can't dwell where honesty is absent. Where denial ends, true repair begins.
This is often the hardest step. Even after we acknowledge the wound and confess honestly, we still want to control how healing unfolds. We want to numb the pain, fill the void, chase validation to ease the ache. But healing doesn't come through padding or shortcuts. It comes when we choose to sit in the discomfort of vulnerability, with God and with trusted community. That's where grace begins to do its best work.
Hope is essential, but it feels fragile. Faith often comes easier. We believe God exists, we've seen him be faithful before. Hope asks something harder. It asks us to lean into the acknowledgement that God still has good for us. In the depths of pain, that feels risky. But healing can't happen without it. In Mark 5, the bleeding woman reached for Jesus' robe not only because she had faith in his power, but because she had hope that power would heal her personally. Faith believes God can. Hope believes he will.
So what do you do while you wait, while you process, while you heal and then process some more?
You give.
If someone broke you, set your heart on making someone else whole. If someone tore you down with their words, be intentional about speaking life. If you've been crushed, look for ways to build someone else up. Healing deepens when we step outside ourselves and pour into others.
And when the pain feels unrelenting, count your blessings. Name them one by one. Let gratitude shift your perspective until you see, again, the fingerprints of God all over your life.
Because the truth is this: he has good for you, every single day. Healing is real. Hope is worth the risk. And if you reach out, you'll find the Healer reaching back.
When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
